Breed Standards & Coat Patterns

Pygmy goats are recognised in a number of distinct coat colours and patterns, each with its own unique characteristics. While every goat has its own individual appearance, recognised colours and markings help preserve the integrity of the breed and are an important consideration in responsible breeding.

At LaFamilia, we follow the National Pygmy Goat Association (USA) Breed Standards when assessing colour, markings, and overall conformation.

What Makes a Quality Pygmy Goat?

The ideal pygmy goat is compact, muscular, well-balanced, and friendly in temperament. Strong structure, correct proportions, and breed characteristics all play an important role in responsible breeding programs.

Recognised Coat Patterns

Black pygmy goats have a black coat with distinctive white accents around the muzzle, crown, eyes, and ears.

White tail accents and belly bands may also be present and are recognised within the breed standard.

Brown Agouti

Brown Agouti

Brown Agouti goats have a rich brown coat created by brown and white hairs intermingled throughout the body.

Darker brown stockings and facial markings are characteristic of this pattern, giving each goat a beautifully textured appearance.

Black Agouti

Black Agouti

Black Agouti is one of the most recognisable pygmy goat patterns.

Black and white hairs combine to create a grizzled appearance that can range from lighter shades through to almost solid black.

Distinct facial markings and black stockings are key characteristics.

Grey Agouti

Grey Agouti

Grey Agouti goats display a softer grey appearance created by the intermingling of black and white hairs.

Their distinctive white facial accents and darker stockings help define this recognised colour pattern.

Caramel with black markings

Caramel with black markings

These goats range from creamy white through to warm tan, with black facial markings, dorsal stripe, socks, and other defining features creating the distinctive caramel pattern.

Caramel with Brown Markings

Caramel with Brown Markings

Similar to the black-marked variety, these goats range from cream to tan but feature rich brown markings instead.

Brown facial accents, dorsal stripes, and stockings create a softer variation of the caramel pattern recognised within the breed standard.

Understanding Markings

While colour plays an important role in identifying recognised coat patterns, the placement of markings is equally important within the breed standard.

Certain facial markings, stockings, dorsal stripes, and other characteristics are considered desirable and help define each recognised colour pattern. However, markings that fall outside the breed standard, often referred to as random markings, may be faulted when goats are assessed in the show ring.

The severity of these faults depends on the size, placement, and overall impact of the marking. Some random white patches may be considered acceptable within specific colour groups, while others can affect how closely a goat conforms to the recognised standard. The examples below illustrate some of the random markings that may influence judging outcomes.

Why Breed Standards Matter

Breed standards are about preserving the health, structure, temperament, and unique characteristics of pygmy goats for future generations.

At LaFamilia, we are committed to responsible breeding practices that protect and improve the breed while raising healthy, well-socialised goats.
